Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I choose between Henna, Jagua, or White Henna?

Great question! It depends on the look you want and the occasion:

    • Henna 🌿 – Traditional reddish-brown stain. Best for cultural events, weddings, or if you want an earthy, natural vibe. Takes 2–3 days to fully mature.

    • Jagua 🌑 – Deep blue-black stain that looks just like a tattoo. Great for tattoo trials, scar cover-ups, or if you want something bolder. Must book 1–2 days before your event.

    • White Henna 🤍 – Not a stain, but a body adhesive. Perfect for photoshoots, parties, or when you want an instant, elegant look. Best for same-day wear.

  • Henna is three things: a plant, a design style, and a cultural experience.

The Plant: True henna comes from the Lawsonia inermis plant and naturally stains the skin a burgundy-brown color. Any other color (like black or red ) is not real henna and is often made with harmful chemicals.

The Designs: Henna-inspired designs can be created using other natural, skin-safe products like Jagua gel (which stains blue-black) or white body paint (which does not stain). These are great for “tattoo trials” or creative body art.

The Experience: Henna is deeply rooted in community, tradition, and celebration. This ritual has been practiced for over 5,000 years and continues to evolve today. At Haus of Henna, we aim to honor that legacy by offering all three aspects—plant-based products, beautiful designs, and meaningful experiences—at every appointment and event.

  • Henna and Jagua are completely different in origin, color, and application—but both are natural and safe when used correctly.

Henna is a desert plant native to North Africa and the Middle East. It produces a natural stain in shades of brown to burgundy, depending on skin type and aftercare. Our henna is 100% natural and chemical-free. You’ll hear terms like “green” or “brown henna”—these just refer to different stages of the paste or stain, not different products.

Jagua is made from a tropical fruit grown in the Amazon, historically used by Indigenous tribes in Peru and surrounding areas. It stains the skin a blue-black color, making it a popular natural alternative to chemical “black henna,” which we never use.

    Key difference:
Henna requires 20 mins dry time and 12–24 hours of water avoidance after application to achieve a dark stain. Jagua, on the other hand, takes 40 mins to dry and can be washed off after 3–5 hours, making it more flexible for certain schedules.

  • Henna and Jagua body art is safe for all ages and most skin types. Our natural formulas are gentle enough for children, pregnant women, and even cancer patients.

That said, if you have sensitive skin or known allergies, please let us know when booking. Since Jagua is made from a citrus fruit, those with citrus allergies should opt for henna instead.

  • Yes! Both natural henna and jagua show up beautifully on all skin tones.

If you’re concerned about visibility or prefer a darker stain, jagua is a great option—it leaves a deep blue-black color. That said, with proper aftercare, natural henna will also give a rich, long-lasting stain.

Keep in mind: white henna does not stain the skin. It sits on top and fades more quickly, making it a fun, short-term option for events or photos.

  • Henna: Book 2–3 days before your event for the stain to fully deepen.

Jagua: Book 1–2 days before—the stain develops faster and shows well after 24 hours.

White Henna: Can be done the day of or day before your event, since it doesn’t stain the skin.

Need something last minute? Jagua is a great option—it dries on the skin, seals itself, and requires no aftercare tools. The design looks beautiful even before the stain develops.

  • Proper before and aftercare is key to getting a deep, long-lasting stain!

    Here are the basics:

Before your appointment: Make sure the area is clean, dry, and free of lotions or oils.

    After your appointment:

For henna, keep the paste on as long as possible (4–8 hours or more), then scrape it off—no water! Avoid water for 12–24 hours afterward.

For jagua, let it sit for 3–5 hours, then gently rinse with soap and water. Avoid scrubbing and let the stain darken over 24–48 hours.

  • Totally normal! Both henna and jagua stain darkest on the hands and feet because the skin in those areas is thicker and absorbs the pigment more deeply.

Other areas—like the arms, legs, or back—will still stain, but typically appear lighter and may fade a bit faster.

  • Our artists can absolutely use your reference design, especially for tattoo trials. However, adjustments may be needed to fit the specific body area or to stay true to the flow of the design on your skin.

If you want no changes at all, please communicate that clearly upfront—we’ll do our best to honor your request. Just note that exact replicas aren’t guaranteed, even for our own designs, since every body is a unique canvas.

  • First of all—you're not alone! This is a surprisingly common issue for first-timers. Whether you forgot to wash it off or didn’t scrub thoroughly enough, waking up with an unexpected stain (hello, accidental Mike Tyson!) can be frustrating.

The good news? Our products are high quality and designed to last. The bad news? That means the stain won’t fade overnight.

Your best bet: exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. The more you help your skin shed, the faster the stain will fade. Use a mix of physical and chemical exfoliants (store-bought or DIY), and consult your dermatologist or do a little research online for gentle options.

Think of this as your initiation into the henna world—many of us grew up smearing it everywhere, staining sheets, and learning the ropes the hard way. For next time, please follow the aftercare instructions carefully—we promise it makes a difference!

  • We love that you’re asking this—it shows thoughtfulness and respect.

Cultural appropriation is real, and at The Haus of Henna, we believe the way to shift appropriation into appreciation is through education, which is at the heart of everything we do.

Henna has deep cultural roots across Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, where it’s been used in rituals, rites of passage, and celebration for thousands of years. Today, we see people from all backgrounds drawn to henna during transitional moments—weddings, healing journeys, travels, even tattoo trials. That shared human experience is something we honor.

We welcome everyone to enjoy henna, so long as it's done with intention and respect. Ask questions, stay curious, and know that you're not just getting a design—you’re connecting to an ancient practice. We're here to share the meaning and artistry behind every piece.

  • Yes, we offer henna to men who approach the experience with intention and respect.

However, it’s important to understand that some artists—particularly women from traditional or religious backgrounds—may not feel comfortable working on male clients. This isn’t about exclusion; it’s about honoring personal and cultural boundaries.

Henna is more than body art—it’s a sacred, historically feminine tradition. We ask that all clients, especially men, honor the space, the artist, and the heritage behind the practice.
